9 Month Doctor Check-up

9 months old...

Where has the time gone?!?! :( I know, I know,  I say this every time Josselyn has a doctors apt, but it really does seem like just yesterday that my little princess was born. I can not believe that in 3 months she will be 1 year old!!!

Well anyways, her 9 month doctors apt went great (well sorta). The good news is, she is a healthy baby girl! She is still a tall super model! Josselyn is in the 95% for height; she is 29 1/4 inch tall. She is a bit skinny weighing 17lbs 6oz, which is in the 25% (don't ask me how she is skinny when she still breast feeds 5X a day!!! lol). Developmentally Josselyn is right on track and the doctor did not have any concerns. Now for the not so fun part...The mean mean mean nurse pricked Josselyn's toe to draw some blood so they could check her iron levels for anemia (her finger was too skinny). Josse absolutely hated the whole process and she screamed, kicked & held her breath for about 5 minutes while the slow nurse squeezed Josselyn's toe to get enough blood out. I know my daughter is probably a little dramatic (since she is my kid) but the nurse had no sympathy & she kept saying, "Wow someone is having a temper tantrum". Ummm...I thought Josselyn was doing pretty good considering she had someone squeezing blood out of her poor, cold, big toe! I ran out of the Dr's office at 16 years old when they tried to give me a tetanus shot and when I was a child it took 2-3 nurses to hold me down for any shot, so compared to that Josselyn was an angel! Unfortunately, things only got worse for poor Josse after the toe prick. Before I could even calm Josselyn down from her first traumatic experience the mean nurse jammed a huge needle into her thigh for her last round of hepatitis B shots :( If you read my "Controversial Ear Piercing" Blog then imagine the horrific picture of Josselyn's crying as they pierced her ears and then multiply it by 10! That was what poor Josse's face looked like after the hepatitis B shot. This was definitely the hardest doctors appointment I have experienced, but at least it is over and we have 3 months to prepare for the next doctors appointment.

It is amazing how much has changed for Josselyn over the past few week...

First of all, Josselyn now LOVES table food! We have introduced her to foods like avocado, green beans, black beans, tomato, pancakes, bread, watermelon & bananas. Luckily, Josselyn still loves baby food so I can still feed her those awesome organic baby food pouches when we are out & about.  Josselyn also loves to drink from a straw lol (so anytime I go to Starbucks I have to order Josse a tall ice water lol).

My little big girl is also on the move, she can now army crawl or "inch worm" all over the house. She also likes to walk if you hold both of her hands (she thinks she is so big!). I now need to  child proof my house ASAP and I am not looking forward to doing that!

We also found out that Josse is a water baby! She went swimming for the 1st time on Memorial Day and she absolutely loved it!!! She even kicked her legs as she floated around in her baby floaty. We are going to have a lot of fun in the pool this summer.

It comes as no surprise that my daughter also loves to talk! You have to watch out because she is a little parrot and she will repeat almost any word you repeatedly say to her. Some of the words she repeat besides "mama" & "dada" are: Cat = "a", Thank You = "tain too", Please = "peese", Good Bye = "bye bye", Hi = hu, Dog = "do" and Book= "boo". Every time she comes home from her YaYa's house she is saying a new word (I am pretty convinced that my mom has some weird way of brain washing babies to talk haha).

Josselyn has also learned how to shake her head back & forth (to the left and right), so anytime you ask her a question it looks like she is saying NO. I seriously can't believe my daughter is already telling me NO!!! Can't you just see the attitude in the 2 pictures below? haha

Oh, and I can not forget to mention Josselyn's new favorite trick...she has mastered how to RIP OFF HER HAIR BOWS :( I am devastated! I am sure most of you are laughing or cheering Josselyn on because you think the bows & flowers I put on her head are way to big & ridiculous but I love them and I have invested wayyyy to much $$$ on them for her to boycott them all together lol, therefore I am currently trying to figure out a clever way to keep them on her head (if you are pro-big bows and you have a suggestion please let me know!)

Well, that about sums up what is new in our life. My little buddy keeps my busy 24/7 but I absolutely love it! These past 9 months have with out a doubt been the best months of my life & I look forward to the many months & years to come.

I always loved the quote "My greatest blessings call me MOM" but I never truly understood it until now.

For This Child I Prayed...

1 Samuel 1:27-28
"I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.  So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there."

On May 15, 2012 we experienced one of the most significant moments in our life. That day Josselyn Grace Alcala was dedicated to the Lord. A baby dedication is a huge step for mother and father. You see, a baby has no idea what is going on at their dedication service. Most babies sleep, smile, or cry while the pastor is conducting the dedication (Josselyn decide to eat her shoe & shake her head back & forth as if she were saying NO lol) Anyways, babies are clueless about the whole thing. The purpose of a baby dedication is really for the parents. Dedicating a child, means that as parents you are publicly making a commitment to give your precious child back to the Lord. It is a symbol that says, God as much as I love this child and as much as I want to guard and protect them from anything and everything, I know that you are their ultimate Father and you want what is best for them even more than I do. As a mother it is really hard for me to say God I let go of my daughter and I give her to you; not my will but Your will be done in her life. Maybe it is hard becasue my daughter is one of the most priceless, precious gifts I have ever received, and as humans it is only natural to hold on tight to our most precious gifts. But what I am learning is that as much as I love Josselyn, the Lord loves her even more. She is first and foremost His daughter and He is just allowing me the privilege to be her mother so that I can raise her up in the things of the Lord. Yes, my job as a mother is absolutely important. It is up to me to teach her about God and to show her what it means to be a Christ follower. But I have to always remember that as much as I want what is best for her, God wants it even more and as much as I love her, God loves her even more and as much as I want to protect her God wants to protect her even more. She is a child of God and I have just been placed here to lead & guide her while she is on this earth. So just as 1 Samuel 1:27 says, I prayed for this child, the Lord blessed me with Josselyn so now I give her back to the Lord...

Now I must give you all a little recap of Josselyn's beautiful dedication service! Since John & I are the college/young adult pastors it was only appropriate that she be dedicated at our college/young adult service "Invictus" at Relevant Life Church. There were many things that made this service special. First of all, when I was 18 years old and a 1st year student in Masters Commission Bible School I was baptized by Pastor Lloyd Zeigler & Pastor Joey Alcala (who is now my brother in law). A few years later those same two special men Pastor Lloyd & Joey married John and I. Almost exactly 10 years later from when I was first baptized I had the honor of having once again Pastor Loyd & Joey dedicated my daughter. It could not have been more perfect.

Another very special moment in the service was when Joey spoke a beautiful word into Josselyn's life. Joey said that as he was praying for Josselyn the Lord gave him the word "illuminate" to speak over Josselyn's life. Joey talked about how she already illuminates a room and as she grows up, she is going to be a light who ILLUMINATES for Jesus every where she goes. I really feel like that is the perfect word to describe my shining little Josse who already lights up so many people's lives! Joey then gave Josselyn a gorgeous antique pink lamp, so that she can always remember the powerful word that was spoken over her life at only 8 months old. My prayer is that my daughter will always be a Light for Christ where she goes.

The last special thing that I need to mention is the fact that not only did Josselyn have her mom & dad there to dedicate her, but both of her Grandmothers were there (my mom "Yaya" & John's mom "Gigi") and Josselyn's grandfather "Papa" was there along with my sister MaryBeth, Johns brother Joey (who dedicated her), his wife Auntie Stacey and their 2 daughters Isabella & Alexandria. Plus tons of other very special adopted Aunties & Uncles from church ;) Josselyn is a blessed little girl to have some many incredible people who love her in her life.

That about sums up Josselyn's baby dedication. It was a beautiful day I will always remember. I am so blessed to have that little girl in my life and while she is young I commit to raise her and train her in the things of God and as she grows older I vow to never stop praying over her.

Proverbs 22:6 "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it."

The Not So Perfect, Yet Absolutely PERFECT Mothers Day

My 1st Mothers Day...

May 13th 2012 was my very 1st Mothers Day! I'll be honest, I have been looking forward to this holiday for my entire life (but for all the wrong reasons lol). You see, one of my "love languages" is gifts, so I love any excuse to get presents and Mothers Day seemed like the perfect additional holiday to cash in for some flowers, chocolates & maybe even something sparkly!!! I actually never even thought about the most special gift, which is just being a MOTHER until this year.

My very 1st Mothers Day started off a little rocky. We had just flown back into Dallas the night before. I had spent the last 3 days in Midland working, and John & Josse came along for the ride. The trip was a blast but unfortunately Josselyn does horrible when she is "off schedule" and she was completely off her normal napping/eating schedule due to the trip. On top of having a fussy/tired baby, Josselyn came back to Dallas with a cold :( Her nose was running nonstop!!! So on Sunday morning, "Mothers Day" Josse woke up feeling under the weather, plus she was teething. I ended up heading to church early to help my mom do some Mothers Day decorating and John & Josse were going to meet me there. Well, things only seemed to get worse. It took Daddy a little longer than normal getting Josse ready & I was anxiously waiting for them to arrive. I couldn't wait to see how cute Josselyn was going to look in her adorable coral dress. When I finally saw them walk in the church doors, I rushed towards them and put my arms out towards Josse. Immediately John said, "DON'T TOUCH HER...She exploded & we are both covered in poop". Yup, one of Josselyn's famous poop explosions on her new Mothers Day dress. The good news was, we were able to ditch the poop covered bloomers & save her dress. Well, the service started & when it came to Josselyn things continued to go NOT as planned. Josselyn usually naps during service, but today she decided to stay awake & scream so loud her Gigi & Papa had to take her out of service into the hall way. Since, Josse did not have her usual "church service nap" she began falling apart as soon as church ended. Josselyn's post church melt down was definitely going to put a damper on the lunch reservations we had with our entire family! John's parents were in town so his entire family plus my mom and sister had all planned on going to a nice Mothers Day lunch together. As we were headed to the restaurant my tired, teething, stuffy nosed princes began screaming bloody murder. I knew the lunch plans were not going to fly with her. John ended up dropping Josselyn & I off at the house so we could lay her down for a nap (Josselyn did wake up in time to still make part of the family lunch).

As you can see nothing was going according to "MY PLAN" and I really started to have a pity party for myself. My ideal, picture perfect "1st Mothers Day" seemed almost ruined. After lunch, John, Josselyn and I came back to the house. John & I sat on the floor playing with little Josselyn and it was then & there that I realized that this day was the furthest thing from being ruined. I stopped and realized that I have a beautiful, happy, healthy daughter (besides her little sniffles) and I have an amazing, supportive husband (who is one of the best dad's I have ever seen). Right as I started realizing how FORTUNATE and BLESSED I truly am, my sweet little girl started giving the best, sloppy, open mouth kisses to both her daddy & I. Those kisses seriously made my day (of course I quickly pulled out my iPhone & John & I started snapping pictures lol). So all in all, I had the BEST 1st Mothers Day in the world. I am quickly learning that apart of being a mom is learning to roll with punches and go with the flow. When it comes to kids, your world can become very unpredictable so you just have to make the best out of every situation & have fun!

So CHEERS to all the great mothers in this world...Our job is by no means easy, but it is by far the best job in the world!
